Using Your Private Health Insurance for Physiotherapy in London

If you have private health insurance through work or your own policy, physiotherapy is one of the most commonly used — and most commonly misunderstood — benefits on it. Patients often assume cover works the same way across every insurer, then get a surprise invoice or a delay because a referral wasn't in place before their first session. The good news is that once you understand how the process works, using your policy for physiotherapy is usually straightforward.

How private health insurance actually covers physiotherapy

Most UK insurers — Bupa, AXA Health, Vitality and others — will cover physiotherapy for musculoskeletal problems: back and neck pain, joint injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, sports injuries and persistent aches that haven't settled with rest. What varies by insurer, and often by the specific policy your employer or you have chosen, is:

    • How many sessions are covered before you need further authorisation
    • Whether you need a GP referral before your first appointment, or can self-refer
    • Whether there's an excess you need to pay before cover kicks in
    • Which clinics and practitioners are recognised on their network

This is why the first useful step isn't booking an appointment — it's calling the number on the back of your insurance card and asking two questions: do I need a referral, and how many sessions am I authorised for. Most insurers will give you an authorisation code over the phone or by email, which we can then use to bill them directly.

Do you need a GP referral first?

This is the detail that catches people out most often. Bupa and AXA Health typically require a referral from a GP or, in some cases, a consultant, before physiotherapy sessions are covered — though many policies now allow "open referral" or self-referral for a first assessment, especially for straightforward musculoskeletal issues. Vitality has moved further towards self-referral pathways for many of its members, meaning you can often book directly with a chartered physiotherapist without seeing a GP first.

Because this genuinely differs policy to policy, the safest approach is always to check directly with your insurer before your appointment, rather than assuming. If a referral is needed and you attend without one, you may end up paying privately for that first session and claiming it back later — which is avoidable with a five-minute phone call.

What to check before your first session

A few practical things are worth confirming with your insurer before you come in:

    • Your membership number and any authorisation or claim code for the sessions
    • Whether there's an excess on your policy that applies to physiotherapy claims
    • The number of sessions authorised, and what happens if you need more
    • Whether the clinic you're attending is recognised by your insurer (Method Physiotherapy works with the major UK providers)

We're happy to help you work through this before you book — our reception team deals with insurance queries daily and can usually tell you quickly whether something is likely to be straightforward.

What we treat under insurance referrals

Insurance-funded physiotherapy at our clinic covers the same conditions we see day to day: pain relief for back, neck and joint problems, rehabilitation after surgery or injury, and structured physiotherapy programmes for issues that have been dragging on longer than they should. We also see a good number of runners, cyclists and gym-goers referred through their policies for sports-related injuries, where our athlete-focused physiotherapy experience helps get people back to training safely rather than just pain-free at rest.

If you're not covered, or your sessions run out

Sometimes cover doesn't stretch as far as a full recovery needs, particularly for more complex or long-standing problems. In that case, many patients choose to continue on a self-pay basis for the remaining sessions, or move into a longer-term rehab and strength programme once the acute pain has settled. Either way, you're not starting from scratch — your physiotherapist already knows your history and can simply continue the plan.

    Getting started

Insurance-funded physiotherapy shouldn't feel complicated, and in practice it usually isn't once the referral and authorisation are sorted. If you're dealing with a niggle that isn't going away, or you've just come off a course of insurance sessions and want an honest opinion on next steps, our team at our Vauxhall clinic can talk you through what your policy covers and get you booked in for an assessment.
